What It Involves
Trauma-focused therapy provides specialised psychological support for people experiencing the ongoing effects of distressing or traumatic experiences.
Our psychologists may use a range of evidence-based trauma-informed approaches, including EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) where clinically appropriate. Therapy is tailored to the individual and may focus on reducing distress associated with traumatic memories, improving emotional regulation, strengthening coping strategies and helping you regain a greater sense of safety and control.
The approach recognises that trauma can affect people in different ways, and treatment is adapted to your experiences, circumstances and therapeutic goals.
Who It's For
Trauma-focused therapy may be suitable for individuals who have experienced a traumatic, distressing or overwhelming event and continue to notice an impact on their emotional wellbeing or everyday life.
This may include people experiencing intrusive memories, heightened anxiety, avoidance, emotional distress, difficulties with sleep, changes in mood, increased alertness or difficulty feeling safe, as well as those struggling with the longer-term effects of past experiences.
You do not need to have a formal diagnosis to seek support. Your psychologist can work with you to understand what you are experiencing and determine an appropriate therapeutic approach.
What to Expect
Your psychologist will begin by taking the time to understand your experiences, current concerns and what you would like to achieve through therapy.
Trauma therapy is approached carefully and collaboratively, with treatment progressing at a pace that is appropriate for you. Your psychologist will discuss the recommended approach, including EMDR where suitable, and explain what you can expect before beginning any trauma-focused work.
Sessions may initially focus on building a sense of safety, developing coping and emotional regulation strategies, and preparing for more focused therapeutic work. Your treatment plan can then be adjusted over time according to your needs, progress and comfort.
